Fes to Volubilis Day Trip

Details of the Fes to Volubilis Day Trip along with Meknes and Moulay Idriss

This Fes to Volubilis Day Trip will take you back to ancient times, and allow you to immerse yourself in Morocco’s rich and diverse history. We will start by picking you up from your preferred meeting location in Fez, then get to drive through the scenic Saiss plains before arriving at our first destination: Volubilis town. Volubilis is perhaps one of the most important archeological sites in Morocco because it used a Roman capital back during the 3rd century BC. The town now contains the well-preserved ruins from this time period, since it became a UNESCO world heritage site in 1997.

Walking through the city itself and being surrounded by the remnants of all the ancient buildings will give you a feel of what life was like back then. The most famous of the ruins would be the temple of Venus, the main Basilica, the triumphal arc, public baths, and the artistic mosaics. These buildings remain as witnesses to the level of social and economic life that the Romans once had back here, and you will get to discover it all for yourself.

When we are done discovering Volubilis town, we will move on to our next destination for the day, which is the holy town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoune. The town is luckily only about 5 kilometers away from Volubilis, located at the top of the Zerhoune hill. Moulay Idriss Zerhoune holds such a spiritual value for Moroccans because it is home to the mausoleum of Moulay Idriss, the founder of the first Islamic dynasty in Morocco. The mausoleum is located just outside the main town square, which you will get to enjoy and explore during your time here.

Last but not least, our final destination for this one day trip will be none other than the imperial Meknes city. Meknes is considered the Ismaili capital since it used to be the capital of the kingdom back during the rule of the Ismaili dynasty. This has made Meknes a perfect historical location embodying all the aspects of a truly imperial city. You will get to explore all these aspects today, ranging from protective ramparts to gates and granaries. The most important ones of these monuments that we will visit today will be the mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, the Bab Mansour gate, and Sahrij Souani.

Finally, we will return to Fes after having lunch in Meknes, then we will drop you off at your accommodation. This is how we end our Fes to Volubilis Day Trip.
